My studio is nestled on a beautiful farm in the heart of rural Kentucky. The studio is surrounded by scenic pastoral settings: wild flowers, small hills, creeks, and ponds. "Shimo Kobo" means "Frost (my last name) Studio" in Japanese and is owned by Nanae Kuwabara Frost. I am originally from Hokkaido, Japan. After living in San Francisco for 10 years, I moved and built a studio here in Kentucky in 2000.

Since I enjoy all forms of arts and crafts: ceramic, iron work, sawing, painting, etc., I have incorporated them in my work. Here are some photos showing a typical day at the studio.

I am making a lamp frame by bending a hot iron rod. My neighbor (Elmer who's father was a blacksmith) gave me this old forge that was missing one leg. My husband performed surgery on it and gave it a new life. I call it "Frankenstein forge".

The fire gets really hot!

Here, I am putting frame pieces toghther using a welder.

For the finish, I grind the welded parts.
