 These beautiful hand carved signs are inscribed with Japanese characters. These signs are meticulously chiseled from native American oak boards recycled / reclaimed local deteriorating barns. Thus the 100+ year aged wood shows all the wonderful characteristics of vintage barn boards. The worm holes and natural aging found on this hand selected vintage timber really lends itself to the authentic look of a truly ancient Japanese signs. Similar sign were commonly found throughout Japan dating back hundreds of years. These signs were found on Temples, Places of Business and in particular homes. Most Japanese homes still have similar signs telling the name of the family who dwells within. An original sign from 75 years ago would cost you thousands of dollars. As the artist hand carves each sign, we can accommodate most any request. Our chief artist is originally from Japan and she does all the translation to assure accuracy. Not everything is translatable verbatim. So please send us 2-3 different possibilities. Family Surnames and Names of Business are the most common. Single words like: Love, Peace and Happiness are also good alternatives. Surnames that have a basis in nature like: Snow, Frost, Wood, Hill, Green, Black, etc. all translate well. Likewise almost any common noun is translatable. Where as a family name like "Depp" would raise some difficulties. In cases like "Depp", we will give you phonetically matched characters. In these cases, several combinations can usually be created, so you can choose your favorite one from our examples.
